See if your loans can be forgiven or cancelled

In specific circumstances, a portion or all of your loans may be forgiven or cancelled. This is dependent on factors like your chosen career, disability status or school-related issues. Learn more here.

Public service loan forgiveness programs

To encourage students to pursue certain careers, the federal government has created many programs that forgive some or all of a borrower’s student loan debt. This means that certain careers in government, the military and education, including certain teaching jobs, will qualify you for loan forgiveness.

Some of these programs overlap, and the specifics of the programs change frequently. For the latest information about loan forgiveness, visit the Federal Student Aid website.

Loan cancellation

All federal student loans have built-in protection for borrowers so that in certain limited situations, you can have your loans cancelled. Generally this happens if the school you attended closed while you were there, or some form of fraud occurred. Loans may also be cancelled if a borrower becomes permanently disabled, or upon the borrower’s death.

Call us and we'll send you the appropriate form and help you submit it to your lender to apply for loan cancellation.
